A Certain Appeal

Liz Bennet in this amazing novel is everything I want to be and more. She is strong, sarcastic, sexy, and is an amazing friend. This is another Pride and Prejudice remake, but to be honest it is so much more. It is a mixture of total realism of a current-day romance novel and a deep dive into the burlesque culture that I was enamored with from the first page.

Liz Bennet is living her best life in New York. During the day she works as an administrative assistant at a big company. At night she is a Stage Kitten "Kitten Caboodle" at Meryton which is a top Burlesque club in Manhattan. She has grown close to her burlesque family and rooms in the same apartment as the club's amazing male vocalist Jane. One night Liz meets both Will Darcy and Charles Bingley at the club. Charles is looking at purchasing the location and investing in the club bringing Darcy along for the ride. In the process, both men find something more than either expected. Liz on the other hand hears Darcy call her "tolerable" which just rakes her nerves and makes her want nothing to do with the tall, dark, handsome man even if her body says otherwise. Fate on the other hand continues to push them together, especially after Jane and Charles find themselves falling in love. When the charming Mr. Wickham comes in and puts a wrench into things because of his accusations against Darcy and his new ally in business, Liz has to decide what to believe and how best to help Meryton.
This book was such a great read. I honestly didn't want to put it down. I loved Liz's personality and the fresh take incorporating burlesque. I loved the gender swap that she did with Jane and just how the whole Meryton family developed and came together at the end. If you love Pride and Prejudice or just enjoy the enemies to lovers trope this is a MUST read! This was such a fun read and though there are some steamy parts I enjoyed the overall story. The ending was a great celebration that made me want to find a burlesque club near me and check it out myself. The body positiveness of it all was awesome and seeing different characters show strength in different ways was wonderful to read while also making the characters more dynamic. Would love to return to these characters so I hope Venessa King keeps writing. I give it 5/5 stars!
