This was a book heavily suggested to me by another amazing teacher. I was excited to read it just because of how excited she was and how much she said her children loved it. I am not a Hunger Games fan and I have never read the series by Suzanne Collins, but I have heard so many good things that I wanted to give it a try.

Plot: The story is about a young boy named Gregor who follows his little sister Boots into an air-duct which leads them to this fantastical place called the "Underland". There is a city ruled by humans but there are so many other characters as well such a bats, spiders, cockroaches all trying to hold off the rats. There seems to be a war brewing between the rats who want to be in power and everyone else. Gregor stumbles upon this and meets the crown princess of Regalian, Luxa, who is trying to lead her people the best she can. The Regalian council believe Gregor is the great warrior they need, based on The Prophecy of Grey, to fight off the Rats. He is not pleased by any of this and truly just wants to go home with his sister, but after finding out the Rats have his father Gregor ends up going on a quest to help the people and insects of the Underland.

Thoughts: I will be honest, when I started reading and realized this is a animal heavy book I was nervous. I really don't enjoy books where animals are the main characters. It gave me the feelings of Redwall at first, that feeling of begrudging reading something because my grandmother wanted me to read it. I realize animals aren't the main characters, but are a strong part of the story so I kept reading and gave the book a chance. I will say as children's books go this is a solid adventure, fantasy book. It does have some death and fighting so it might be best for older children, 4th grade at the youngest.

Overall it wasn't for me but I know there is a solid audience out there for this type of book. I would give it 3/5. It has some exciting parts and I was excited to see how the story would end once the adventure began. I used the audio book to read through this one and I highly suggest it. The voices are done well and making so much more exciting.
